Mom and Dad have wanted to do this hike for a long time. I mean, they've fantasized about it since even before I was born. It's a long hike from Many Glacier Hotel to the Piegan Pass trail head.

Any of you who know Glacier are at this point thinking, They should actually start at the Siyeh/Piegan Pass trail head and go the opposite direction for about 13 miles to end up at Many Glacier with a whole lot less elevation gain. You're right. That is a much better way to do that hike, but they didn't want to take the trail.

They wanted to start hiking on the Cracker Lake trailhead and then head up a dry waterfall bed to the summit of Wynn and a beautiful day-long ridge walk. After a 4:30AM start to the day and two hours of driving, that's what they did last Sunday with two of their friends. They reached the top of Wynn at 9:30 in the morning. Mom already wanted lunch.

From that summit, they could see their destination for the day. You can, too. Look behind Dad, Mom and Becky in the above picture. Do you see that peak in the clouds? That's where they were aiming. Also notice the beautiful, mostly clear, blue skies at this point.

They hiked another two hours to the next peak, named only 9190 on the map. Mom definitely needed lunch at that point.

In this picture, you can't even see their final mountain anymore. Still, Becky had on sunglasses and the day was looking pretty good.

Two more hours, and the group was on top of Cracker Peak. The jackets and gloves had come out.

Finally, Mount Siyeh! Here, Mom was wondering why she was still in her shorts and the ten-second picture was the only time spent in the snow falling on everyone. Within two hours, everyone was back in the car and happy to be dry. And Mom and Dad were so glad they had been able to do the entire Skyline Experience, thanks to the company of good friends and to my Mormor and Most for watching Serena and me.

Dad knows that I'm planning to hike to Swiftcurrent Lookout with him next summer. I played a game my cousin taught me called "Light the Candle." It involves lighting a stick on fire and then waving it around until it goes out, or asking someone else to blow it out. Moms says she thinks every boy in the whole world has played this game.
We sent Uncle Seth and Most over to the east side of Glacier to get us a camp site really early in the morning, because that seems to be the only way to get a site in the Park in August. Thanks for getting up so early! That made it so the rest of us could get our work and play done and join by dinner on Friday night. Then, we all got to hike to Grinnell Glacier on Saturday. While there, I used a cup to make all kinds of rivers, and Uncle Seth taught me to write my name with a rock. He's such a good teacher!
I think that might have been our last camping trip in Glacier this summer since this week I've been adjusting to Mom actually getting dressed in the morning because she's teaching again this year. She tells me it is only for a few hours in the mornings and that she'll still play with me lots and do all kinds of crafts. Dad says we'll still have time for camping, too. I'm waiting to see how it will actually be before I decide if I like this or not.Trisha Carlsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09095038068914337882noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7302187744589246138.post-12432366398330646872013-08-13T21:20:00.000-06:002013-08-13T21:20:17.434-06:00Bowman Learns to Fillet

1. The first step is catching a fish. Sometimes, this can get cold on the legs. It works best if you can get your dad to hold you out of the cold inlet of Josephine Lake and do most of the fishing for you, but then let you help reel in the trout he hooks.

In July, I had some great time camping with Nana, Gramps and my Dolesh cousins. Since then, I've camped again twice in Glacier. Every time we're anywhere near water, I beg Dad to take me fishing first thing in the morning, and multiple times throughout the rest of the day.

I'm heading back over to Many Glacier tomorrow. My buddy, Stimson, won't be there, but I plan to camp with Mormor and Most and with some people who knew me when I used to ride on rickshaws and first learned to swing. Hooray!

In June, my dad turned 30. I don't think that's old at all, but he's pretty sure it's quite a milestone, and I like excuses to celebrate him. He and Mom climbed a mountain in the morning to celebrate.

It was a cloudy morning, but did clear up for a brief view of Lake McDonald as they climbed back down Stanton Mountain. They showed us these pictures afterward.
Dad's birthday also is a signal to start looking for berries, which Serena and I have been doing for the past weeks. We started with wild strawberries, and have since found loads of huckleberries and a few wild raspberries.

the sandbox and other messy play

We like to scoop and build and spray and measure in sand. Actually, since this picture, Dad's built a huge sandbox that is much classier than this plastic one. Now our sand just makes an island in the corner of it, but we'll get it filled up soon. We are using the plastic turtle box that we got for free as a mini pool and place to splash in water.

Mom and Dad made an old coffee table into a lego play table for me. I use it for crafts and cars and climbing, but mostly for building. Since Serena is still just 14 months old, this stays in my room and I get to close the door if I have lego or marbles out so I can focus on my projects without a demolition crew hovering. Thanks to Mormor and Most, I've got a colorful lego collection to work with.

Now, if we still had a camera, I'd also put a picture of our garden here, because we play in that almost every day. Dad and I worked on boxes and digging all winter and spring long and we planted our first round of seeds on May 10. Since then we've had loads of salad greens (yuck!), snap peas (that the birds haven't gotten to before we do), beets (yuck!), baby carrots (yum!) and the few strawberries we find before Serena picks them. Dad also dug out a big flower bed in the back yard and a few areas for irises, rose bushes and perennials around the front and sides of the house.

My cousins and their parents drove up from Bozeman for the 4th of July. Stimson, Merritt, Serena and I took Mom for a walk downtown for a parade to celebrate and then ate her red, white and blue popsicles (that actually faded from pink to purple) before heading up to Glacier to hang out with Aunt Katy, Uncle Brad and Dad at the Apgar Campground. I can't imagine a much more perfect day.

The next day we hiked to the Hidden Lake Overlook. I wasn't tired because Stimson carried me. Just kidding! He didn't make it very far past that tire before deciding I was too heavy, but it was fun to try, and the actual hike was fun, too, especially when we got to celebrate with family-powered bumper boats in Lake McDonald afterward.

After celebrating Nana and Gramps and their Meat Market, we celebrated some more Minnesota lore by visiting this guy. He even said, "Hi Stimson, Bowman and Merritt from Montana!" What fun Nana and Gramps treated us to at Paul Bunyan Land, where I even rode the tilt-a-whirl and enjoyed my first Ferris wheel.

Actually, Paul Bunyan Land was a side trip from the Peavey Lake Cabin that has been in the Carlson family for multiple generations, just like the Meat Market. I just love visiting there! The first time I went was in Mom's belly one Christmas, but in my post-natal life, all my Minnesota cabin memories are of the summer, and they are great ones!
So, I thought my last post went out on June 12, but it obviously didn't. I guess I'm not as blog savvy as I though. Anyway, whether you knew I was going or not, I did go to the 100 Year Celebration of Carlson Meats and had a wonderful time. I also learned loads.

Gramps celebrated his family's business by offering the entire community a bratwurst patty picnic. It was fun to meet friends and family who appreciate Carlson (hot)dogs as much as I do, as well as to see how loved my Nana and Gramps really are.

I loved my bratwurst burger, and also appreciated all of the desserts set out at the picnic tables. My cousin and I were all set to celebrate, even though we'd spent about 15 hours on the road from Bozeman to get to Grove City long after bedtime the night before.

Aunt Katy made sure we were all appropriately dressed for the celebration by making sure the family members had great shirts to wear. She, my Uncle Andy and Dad are showing them off here.
My shirt said, "He's my gramps" on the back, but I need to work on my posture so you can see that better next time.
Check it out! We got all four cousins in one picture, sort of. Serena thought posing on top of a table was great fun.
Last Monday and Tuesday, Mishi Angie visited from Seattle for a couple of days. Not surprisingly, we went to Glacier and hiked to Avalanche Lake.

After she visited, Dad worked his three long days and then we went camping, again to Glacier. I think this was our first time staying in the Fish Creek Campground. I really love living in Montana. So does Serena.

It's been a bit, so I just wanted to check in. As usual, the family goes to Glacier as much as possible. I'm usually very intense about the whole thing while Serena is usually very intense about sticks and what noise they make when she hits them on Dad's jacket or Mom's head.
In May, Mom ran a Spartan Sprint, and since then I've been creating my own obstacle courses around the house to be run, again intensely, right around bedtime every night.
In April, the Columbia Falls Library hosts Big Rig Day with excavator stories and visits from big machinery. I got to practice driving a grader and a loader this year. Thanks, library ladies!

Also this April, I joined the Kalispell Parks and Recreation Little Explorers for a visit to the Glacier Jet Center and took a tour of some of the hangers and the machine shop. My first flying lesson was very brief. After the short lecture, I got to climb right in the cockpit of the UPS plane!
We planted a few trees at my grandpa's cabin recently. Serena wanted to get in one of the holes we were digging, and Mom asked me if we should plant a Rena Tree. I thought it would be nice because "little Renas" would grow, but then I thought about it more and told her that "then we wouldn't get to be with her" and I wanted to keep her with us.

Our entire family spent a day driving to Seattle at the end of April. In spite of Mom's worrying and over-packing bite-sized snacks in plastic Easter eggs in a recycled egg carton, we made it there by 2 in the afternoon and started off our sunny Seattle trip with some time at Green Lake Park.
While we had lots of visits to check off our list (the zoo, REI, Patagonia, Pike Place Market, a ferry), the definite highlight of our five-day trip was the people we got to see. Mishi Angie had arranged to have all five days off and was tons of fun to hang out with.
Uncle Seth helped Serena and me open our Easter baskets, which included some fun costume paraphernalia.
On Easter, we also got to spend much of the day with Grand Nana who came to Uncle Andy's church to hear him preach and then shared our Easter dinner with us. It was really fun to have three of her great grandchildren all sitting at her feet while she shared about Easter hats she remembered wearing growing up.
Since we left Seattle almost a month ago, I haven't stopped asking my parents when we are going back to see Cedar, Aunt Lisa and Uncle Andy, and Mishi and Uncle Seth. In March, my Nana drove from Bozeman to Kalispell with my cousin, who is already five. I was still two when he came, but almost three. You'll see in these pictures that it was very hard for us to both look at the camera at the same time. We are two busy boys who like to focus on our projects, not smile at a silly machine and run the risk of missing a parade float or making a mistake on our Duplo castle.

While my cousin was visiting, Dad put us to work in the garden. We took it seriously.

We also went to a St. Patrick's Day parade on Main Street in Kalispell. There were a grand total of 22 vehicles, not counting the Shriner mini-cars that went by lots of times in circles. It was a little like the Bangladeshi New Year parades and celebrations we saw in Dhaka.
As Serena is demonstrating, it was a pirate party, thanks to my love of this book: Ahoy! Today was my actual birthday. I was quite shocked by breakfast in bed, for which I had requested a popsicle (frozen apple juice) and cupcakes (peanut butter muffins with jelly and cream cheese frosting). Mom and Dad added bacon, kuchen and oranges.
After an afternoon at my current favorite park, "the tractor one," and supper at Norm's News in Kalispell, I ended the day like this while Mom biked home. What do you think I'll learn this year?

I love building with Duplo and Lego blocks! I think Lego would be my favorite, but I have to be really careful because Serena likes to put the pieces in her mouth, so usually we have the Duplo out instead. This day, Dad and I built a skijoring horse and skier. Dad's usually got pretty great building inspiration.

Most of all, I love Pirate Pete right now. My friend Tristan gave me a book about Pirate Pete a long time ago, and now I like to set up my own ship and sail the ocean blue in my room as well as asking Mom and Dad to tell me stories about Pirate Pete all day long.

Our family Valentine's tradition is to make a new meal all together. Of course, as a two-year-old, I make it difficult to come up with new recipes that everyone will enjoy. As you can see, this year we made pizza. That is not new. What was new was the sauce recipe we made from a blog my Mishi Angie introduced us to. We each got to design a section, and made the whole thing in the shape of a giant heart.

Even Serena ate some pizza, after rubbing it all over her head for a while. She thinks food tastes better after it's been a hat for a while.

How were your Valentine's days?

In February, we got a surprise visit from my Minnesota grandparents. They called on a Saturday and arrived the next Wednesday. It was so fun to drive up to Polebridge with them to throw ice chunks into Bowman Creek, have a snowy picnic and fish in the river.

Of course, while they were with us we also did a few indoor things, like visit a yarn store in Kalispell three times and order French fries at a restaurant.
